The Film

In 1916, Chinese immigrant Joe Lung purchased his first house in Austin, TX—a near-impossible feat during the Chinese Exclusion Act era.

More than a century later, filmmaker June Xu set out to uncover how he pulled it off. What she discovered in the archival records was a surprising twist: the 1916 deed didn't belong to Joe at all, but listed his wife, Dora, as the sole owner. Under Her Name follows Xu’s search through documents, family memories, and conversations with descendants to answer new, deeper questions: What did it mean for a Chinese woman to hold property in her own name during this era? And why was her critical role forgotten for so long?

Under Her Name is a documentary currently in production.

This film will be distributed at Austin PBS
