The Asian American Art & Culture Initiative was founded out of a profound need to create a platform where Asian Americans could authentically showcase their artistic work and amplify their voices. Historically, Asian Americans have been stereotyped as the "model minority," expected to work hard and remain obedient, often silenced in the broader cultural narrative. However, the world has evolved, and with it, the perspectives of younger generations. They see the world differently, challenging outdated stereotypes and asserting their rightful place in the cultural landscape. Recognizing this shift, June Xu established the initiative to ensure that the diverse voices, experiences, and creativity of Asian Americans are not only heard but celebrated. The initiative exists to break down barriers, challenge misconceptions, and provide opportunities for Asian American artists to express their identities, share their stories, and contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant cultural dialogue.
I grew up in an artistic family where craftsmanship was deeply valued. My late great-grandfather was a renowned tailor, and my father has been a jade sculptor and Chinese watercolor painter for many years. As a third-generation artist, I witnessed firsthand how artists typically worked on commissioned pieces, creating art specifically for patrons.
